KYST 920 AM was purchased in 1983 by Cruz Velasquez with a clear vision—to launch Houston’s first Tejano radio station. As the owner of the iconic Stardust Ballroom, Cruz needed a platform to promote Tejano artists and grow the culture he loved. In October 1983, the station—formerly known as KBTL, an all-Beatles format—was transformed into “Radio Alegría,” becoming a groundbreaking voice for Tejano music in Houston.

For the next 40 years, KYST 920 AM served the community through various Spanish-language formats. In 2022, following Cruz Velasquez’s passing, ownership transitioned to his son, Matt Velasquez, who had been part of the station since 2004. Matt initially considered selling the company as the weight of continuing without his father was a painful thought. After a period of prayer and reflection—and ultimately, a renewed sense of purpose, Matt decided it was time to for a change.

In the wake of a post-COVID America marked by cultural division and growing attacks on faith and patriotism, Matt saw an opportunity to take a stand. On January 1, 2024, KYST returned to an English format and was reborn as Patriot Talk 920 AM—a station dedicated to unapologetically promoting faith, freedom, and American values.

Today, Patriot Talk 920 AM stands as Houston’s radio station built on the foundation of our nation as a Christian country—championing the importance of family, the role of parents in raising the next generation, and the defense of our God-given constitutional rights to live free.
